In memory of
Professor Cecilia Hägerhäll, our colleague and role-model, has left us too early after a long period of illness. Cecilia was a remarkable person and her work made a great impression and imprint. Her research focussed on fundamental details of the structure and function of enzyme complexes in mitochondria and has greatly increased the understanding of the respiratory chain in organisms. Cecilia also applied her research to find a cure for breast cancer.
Cecilia had immense courage and engagement for women in science. She was instrumental in the expansion of the WINGS network from the department to the faculty level. She was an active mentor for us and several other young colleagues. During 2007 Cecilia together with Viveka Alfredsson conducted an analysis of competence assessment within the Chemistry department. The analysis showed that the assessment of competence was biased towards men and that this had consequences for how resources were distributed within the organization.
Through her dedicated mentorship Cecilia made an important difference to our development as scientists and our relationship to academia. While her energy, enthusiasm and force will be greatly missed, her great spirit has made an everlasting impression and will remain an inspiration.
